There has to be a consensus on who was the greatest player in each sport of all time, right? If you agree with that, you are not a sports fan.
That is a question people will debate until they kick the proverbial bucket. People on opposite sides of borders (think Fran Tarkenton vs. Aaron Rodgers) will argue who has the best signal caller while the Jordan, Bird, Magic, and Wilt arguments come to the forefront in basketball. Sure, they are a things one could argue until they are blue in the face. But what if there was an answer as to who was the most popular player in each sport?
There just may be. After doing some serious digging through sports archives and using a little friend called Google, I have dug up some serious information on the top selling uniforms of all time in sports history.
While an “all time” number is not available, I have some preliminary results to report. First off, since we are “in season” let’s start with major league baseball. America’s passtime and the sport of Summer.
For the 2010 season, we start with a world champion. That’s right, the stoner-looking ace of the San Francisco Giants – Tim Lincecum. Tim has a dominating presence on the mound and looks like the kid in Dazed n Confused, which is why we’re so proud of him. He cracks the top ten at #10.
Next up at #9, love him or hate him, it’s A-Rod. Need I say more?
With the Red Sox being dominant most of the decade, you can’t be surprised that Dustin Pedroia cracks the top ten at #8. Yep, Dustin Pedroia.
Now, #7 may not be known by people outside of Texas, etc, but he has a long ball he can hit and an appearance in the World Series last year. That’s the Rangers Josh Hamilton.
#6 needs no introduction, as it’s the Cardinals charitable and fun loving first basemen, Albert Pujols. Perhaps the games greatest player in 2010.
Finally, another pitcher appears at #5. It’s Cliff Lee, the often switching teams of late ace of the Phildelphia Phillies in 2011. He’s got some serious stuff.
Chase Utley, another Philly, makes it in #4 for 2010. This one shocks me. Chase Utley. Really?
Staying in Philadelphia, Roy “Doc” Halladay makes it to #3 in 2010. Another strong pitcher many will argue is the best in the game. Hmmm…Lee? Halladay? Heck I’d take Oswalt or Hamels on my staff as an ace any day -these other guys are just gravy!
Perhaps my favorite player in the game, Joe Mauer makes it to #2 in 2010 after signing a long term deal with the Twins. This native of Minnesota is the only catcher to get this high – a rare feat – but we doubt his jersey will stop selling any time soon. Joey Baseball.
And for #1 on the list, the recipient of ANOTHER extension this off season, none other than the Captain – Derek Jeter. DJ makes it to #1 after New Yorkers fell in love with him long, long ago. The man still has it, and obviously his popularity has not taken a hit at all.
Back with more from other sports in the next update.
